What This Sales Tax Calculator Does
Two everyday problems, one tool:
- Forward: "The shelf price is $89.99 and my local rate is 8.25% — what will the register say?"
- Reverse: "The receipt total is $97.41 — how much of that was tax, and what was the base price?"
The reverse direction is the one people get wrong by hand (subtracting 8.25% of the total over-corrects). The calculator handles both precisely, at any rate — US state+local sales tax, VAT, or GST.
The Formulas
Total = Price × (1 + rate)
Reverse: Price = Total ÷ (1 + rate) Tax = Total − Price
Forward example — $89.99 at 8.25%
| Tax | 89.99 × 0.0825 | $7.42 |
| Total | 89.99 × 1.0825 | $97.41 |
Reverse example — receipt total $97.41 at 8.25%
| Base price | 97.41 ÷ 1.0825 | $89.99 |
| Tax portion | 97.41 − 89.99 | $7.42 |
Note the common mistake: 97.41 × 0.0825 = $8.04 — the wrong tax figure. Always divide by (1 + rate) to reverse.
How Sales Tax Rates Work in the US
Your checkout rate is usually a stack: state rate + county + city + special districts. That's why neighboring towns can differ by a point or more, and why "what's my rate?" has no single state-level answer.
| Component | Typical range |
|---|---|
| State | 0% – ~7.25% |
| Local (county/city/district) | 0% – ~5%+ |
| Combined | 0% – ~11%+ |
A handful of states charge no general sales tax at all, while some city rates exceed 10%. Check your receipt or your state's revenue site for the exact combined rate, then enter it above.
Exemptions vary too: many states exempt or discount groceries, prescriptions, and sometimes clothing — the rate you enter should match the item category you're buying.
Sales Tax vs VAT vs GST
| US sales tax | VAT / GST (most other countries) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it's applied | Once, at final retail sale | At each production stage (net effect similar) |
| Displayed prices | Usually pre-tax; tax added at register | Usually tax-inclusive on the shelf |
| Typical rates | 0–11% combined | 5–27% |
| This calculator | Forward mode | Reverse mode extracts tax from inclusive prices |
Traveling or invoicing internationally? The reverse mode is exactly how you pull the VAT out of a tax-inclusive price for expense reports or refund claims.
Practical Uses
- Budgeting big purchases: on a $1,200 laptop, 9% tax adds $108 — knowing the register total beforehand avoids surprises.
- Price comparisons across borders: a $500 item at 4% beats a $490 item at 9% ($520 vs $534.10).
- Business invoicing: quote pre-tax, compute tax lines exactly, and reverse totals when clients report tax-inclusive budgets.
- Expense reports and bookkeeping: extract the tax portion from receipts where it isn't itemized.
- Online shopping: marketplaces now generally collect tax based on your delivery address — the same math verifies their line items.
For percentage discounts before tax, chain with the Discount Calculator — discounts apply first, then tax on the reduced price.
The Bottom Line
Sales tax math is simple in one direction and quietly tricky in the other — the divide-by-(1+rate) reversal trips up spreadsheets everywhere. Keep this page handy for both: know your register total before you shop, and pull clean pre-tax numbers off any receipt for budgeting, bookkeeping, or reimbursement.
