How Weighted Grades Work

Most courses don't average scores equally — they weight categories: homework 20%, quizzes 20%, midterm 25%, final 35%. Your course grade is the weighted average:

Grade = Σ (category score × category weight) ÷ Σ weights

Worked example

CategoryScoreWeightContribution
Homework92%20%18.4
Quizzes85%20%17.0
Midterm78%25%19.5
Final—35%?

Current standing on completed work: (18.4+17.0+19.5) ÷ 0.65 = 84.5%. The calculator does this live as you add rows — any number of categories, any weights.

"What Do I Need on the Final?"

The question every student asks in week 14 has a clean formula:

Needed = (Target − current × completed weight) ÷ remaining weight

Continuing the example — target 87% (B+/A− line), 65% of the course complete at 84.5%:

Needed = (87 − 84.5 × 0.65 × 100/100…) → (87 − 54.9) ÷ 0.35 = 91.7% on the final
Target course gradeNeeded on final (35%)
80%71.7%
85%86.0%
90%100.3% — not achievable

That last row is valuable information early: knowing a target is out of reach (or safe) changes how you allocate finals week.

Letter Grades and Percentages

The common US scale (schools vary — check your syllabus):

LetterPercentGPA points
A / A−93–100 / 90–924.0 / 3.7
B+ / B / B−87–89 / 83–86 / 80–823.3 / 3.0 / 2.7
C+ / C / C−77–79 / 73–76 / 70–722.3 / 2.0 / 1.7
D / F60–69 / below 601.0 / 0.0

Using It Strategically

  • Audit weights from the syllabus first — a 10% homework category can't rescue a bombed 40% final, and vice versa.
  • Run scenarios early: knowing in week 8 that you need 85%+ on everything remaining changes behavior while it can still matter.
  • Watch drop policies: "lowest quiz dropped" effectively re-weights — recalculate with it removed.
  • Points-based courses: convert to percentages per category first (points earned ÷ points possible), then weight.

The Bottom Line

A course grade is just a weighted average, and the weighted average is just arithmetic — which means your academic standing is always knowable, weeks before the registrar makes it official. Enter your categories above, check the current number, and let the "needed on final" figure decide where finals-week hours actually go.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply each category score by its weight, sum, and divide by total weight. 92%×20% homework contributes 18.4 points to the course grade.

(Target − points already banked) ÷ final's weight. The calculator computes it for any target — and tells you when a target is mathematically out of reach.

Remove it and recompute the quiz-category average before entering it — dropping effectively re-weights the remaining quizzes.

Yes: convert each category to a percentage first (earned ÷ possible), then apply the category weights.

Commonly 93%+ (90–92 for A−), but scales vary by school — the syllabus always wins.

The calculator normalizes by total weight, so partial-semester or unusual schemes still compute correctly.

Yes — the "current grade" figure weights only completed work, which is the number to compare against targets.
