What Is a Time-Value-of-Money Calculator?

The time value of money (TVM) is finance's founding idea: a dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow, because today's dollar can earn between now and then. Every loan, annuity, bond, and savings plan is just the same five quantities arranged differently:

  • PV — present value (money now)
  • FV — future value (money later)
  • PMT — recurring payment per period
  • r — interest rate per period
  • n — number of periods

Give this calculator any four and it solves the fifth — the same engine as a dedicated financial calculator (BA II Plus, HP 12C), free and in your browser.

The Master Equation

One identity ties all five variables together:

PV(1+r)n + PMT × [((1+r)n − 1) ÷ r] + FV = 0

Sign convention (the part that trips everyone): money flowing away from you is negative, money flowing to you is positive. Deposit $10,000 (PV = −10,000), receive $15,000 later (FV = +15,000). The calculator handles the convention automatically based on the scenario you pick.

Rate solving has no closed form and is found iteratively, exactly as hardware calculators do.

Five Classic Problems, Solved

QuestionGivenSolveAnswer
What will savings grow to?PV 20k, r 6%/yr, n 15FV$47,931
What's a future sum worth today?FV 100k, r 5%, n 20PV$37,689
What must I save monthly?FV 60k, r 7%/yr, n 10yPMT$346.5/mo
What return did I earn?PV −25k, FV 40k, n 8r6.05%/yr
How long to double?PV −10k, FV 20k, r 6%n11.9 years

Each row is a different rearrangement of the same identity — which is the entire point of TVM literacy.

Reading Real Offers With TVM Eyes

  • "Pay $2,999 now or $99/month for 36 months" — solve for the implied rate: ≈ 12.1%/yr. Now it's a loan with a price, not a convenience.
  • "This annuity pays $500/month for 20 years" — discount at your alternative return to find what it's worth as a lump sum today.
  • "Guaranteed to double in 10 years!" — that's 7.18%/yr. Impressive or mediocre depending on the risk attached.
  • Lottery-style "$1M over 30 years" — worth far less than $1M today; PV at 5% ≈ $512k.

TVM turns marketing sentences back into interest rates — the honest common currency of every financial decision.

TVM vs the Specialized Calculators

This is the general instrument; the specialized tools pre-arrange it for common cases:

The Bottom Line

Five variables, one equation, every financial product ever sold. Learn to place PV, FV, PMT, rate, and periods onto any offer you meet, let the solver do the algebra, and you'll never again evaluate a deal by its adjectives. It's the closest thing personal finance has to X-ray vision.

Frequently Asked Questions

The principle that money today is worth more than the same amount later, because it can earn in between. All five TVM variables (PV, FV, PMT, rate, periods) quantify that trade.

Any one of the five TVM variables, given the other four — future value, present value, payment, interest rate, or number of periods.

Translating future money into today's terms: valuing annuities, settlements, buyout offers, or any promise of future payment at your chosen discount rate.

TVM uses cash-flow direction: outflows (deposits, payments you make) are negative, inflows positive. The calculator applies the convention for you per scenario.

Iteratively — no algebraic formula exists. The tool converges numerically, the same method hardware financial calculators use.

Your realistic alternative return: a safe-asset yield for low-risk comparisons, or your expected portfolio return for investment decisions.

Those are TVM pre-configured for one scenario. This solver handles any arrangement — including the odd ones no specialized tool fits.

Yes — enter the payment, term and your discount rate, solve for PV. That's exactly what settlement buyers compute.

Either, as long as rate and periods match: monthly rate with monthly periods, annual with annual. Mixing them is the most common TVM error.

No — everything runs locally in your browser.
